Hannah Cole

Hannah sounds like she was both brave and tough! She was born in Virginia around 1762, married in 1789, and moved to Kentucky in 1805. She and her husband, William, then moved to the area now near Hermann, MO in 1807.

William was killed in by Indians in 1810, and Hannah took her nine (!) children and her sister and her family, and settled where Boonville is today. She built a fort to help protect the settlers from attacks, and for a short time her fort was the county seat. She was issued the first business license to operate a ferry across the Missouri in June 1817.

All this information is from the plaque near Hannah's statue - the town clearly feels very indebted to her for her work.
