Grim reminder

After the Corps wintered here at Fort Clatsop, they left this message they had been here. Copies stayed here, were distributed to local Indian tribes, and one went back to Washington DC by way of a trade ship that went to China first. It is a reminder there was no guarantee the expedition would make it back home, even after the hardships and struggles they had already endured. And they wanted people to know what happened to them at least this far, if they were killed on the way home. When they arrived back in St Louis, they had already been given up for dead, as the trip had been so much longer than forecast. I'm sure it was an exciting reunion!

Travel today is certainly much easier - and I'm very grateful for that!
